October is Fire Prevention Safety Month – a nationwide effort to help homeowners reduce the risk of fires and improve overall safety. At Wright Restoration Services, we’ve seen how quickly a small accident can turn into a major loss. The good news? Most fires are preventable with just a few proactive steps.
Here are some simple ways to make sure your home is
fire-safe this season:
- Check Your Smoke Alarms – Smoke alarms save lives — but only if they’re working. Test each alarm monthly and replace the batteries every year. If your alarms are more than 10 years old, it’s time to replace them completely.
- Watch Your Heat Sources – As temperatures drop, we turn to space heaters and fireplaces to stay warm. Keep at least three feet of space around them and never leave them running while you sleep or leave the house.
- Check Electrical Cords and Outlets – Overloaded outlets and damaged cords are silent fire hazards. Replace worn or frayed cords and avoid daisy-chaining power strips.
- Keep Cooking Areas Clear – Cooking is the number one cause of home fires. Always stay in the kitchen when using the stove or oven, and keep flammable items like towels, pot holders, and paper away from heat sources.
